Sarajevo Film Festival: Promoting Gender Equality through Dedicated Awards and Industry Support for Women in Film
Over the past decade, the Sarajevo Film Festival has actively developed programmes and strategic partnerships aimed at addressing gender imbalance and amplifying women’s voices in the film industry.
Building on the Sarajevo Declaration, a result of the 2014 conference co-organised with the Council of Europe, Sarajevo Film Festival and its industry platform CineLink Industry Days, have introduced targeted initiatives to promote gender parity, empower women filmmakers, and challenge systemic inequalities within the regional and European film landscape.
Since endorsing the 50/50 by 2020 Pledge, the Sarajevo Film Festival has shown a clear commitment to a more balanced representation of women and men directors across its key programming sections. This commitment has a greater impact when viewed against the broader European context, where women remain significantly underrepresented, with only 26% of productions directed by women, according to research by the European Audiovisual Observatory, published in 2023.
This trajectory reinforces Sarajevo Film Festival’s role as a driver of cultural change and its continued commitment to advancing equality both on screen and within the industry.
In addition to its growing regional reach, the Festival’s gender-equality strategy is reinforced through collaborations with key partners: Mastercard, United Nations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Slovenian Film Centre, which support female filmmakers through dedicated awards.
The UNIQA SEE Future Foundation, launched in 2024 by UNIQA, initiated the Female Filmmakers Support Programme to provide production and networking opportunities for women across Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Bulgaria, and Romania. The initiative has since been joined by the Film Centre of Montenegro and the Film Centre of Serbia, and first awardees of the programme were presented in June this year at Slano Film Days.
Two cornerstone awards, Special Award for Promoting Gender Equality and CineLink Female Voices Award, established through key institutional partnerships, stand as pillars of the Festival’s broader commitment to social change, celebrating gender equality and the empowerment of women in film as essential values both on and off screen.
