Jury of the Competition Programme – Documentary Film of the 28th Sarajevo Film Festival
Director Hilal Baydarov, director Salome Jashi and Artistic Director of Movies that Matter Margje de Koning will serve on the Jury of the Competition Programme - Documentary Film of the 28th Sarajevo Film Festival.
Hilal Baydarov
Director, Azerbaijan
Hilal Baydarov was born in 1987 in Baku, Azerbaijan. After graduating with a Master’s degree in Computer Sciences, he left to study film in Sarajevo at the film.factory (a school within the Sarajevo Film Academy) founded by Hungarian director Bela Tarr. Baydarov’s debut feature film HILLS WITHOUT NAMES, premiered at the Montreal Film Festival in 2018. The same year, he won the Docu Talent Award at the Sarajevo Film Festival for his second documentary film BIRTHDAY. His third, fourth and fifth documentary films WHEN THE PERSIMMONS GREW, MOTHER AND SON and NAILS IN MY BRAIN premiered and won several awards at acclaimed festivals such as Vision du Réel, Sarajevo Film Festival and IDFA. Baydarov’s second feature film, IN BETWEEN DYING premiered in the main competition of the 2020 Venice Biennale Film Festival. Baydarov’s third feature CRANE LANTER premiered at the Tokyo Film Festival and won the Best Artistic Contribution award. SERMON TO THE FISH his fourth feature film will premiere in competition at the Locarno Film Festival.
Salome Jashi
Director, Georgia
Salomé Jashi (Tbilisi, 1981) is a documentary filmmaker and producer from Georgia. She holds an MA in documentary filmmaking from Royal Holloway, University of London (2006) and an MA in journalism from Georgian Institute of Public Affairs (2003). Her TAMING THE GARDEN (2021) premiered at Sundance Film Festival's World Cinema Documentary Competition and Berlinale Forum and was nominated for the European Film Awards. Her THE DAZZLING LIGHT OF SUNSET (2016) was awarded the Main Prize at Visions du Réel’s Regard Neuf Competition and other festivals. Her earlier work BAKHMARO (2011) was nominated for the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. She was a fellow of the Nipkow Scholarship in 2017 and the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program in 2020. Salomé Jashi is a member of the European Film Academy.
Margje de Koning
Artistic Director of Movies that Matter, Netherlands
After finishing her studies, Margje de Koning made all sorts of documentaries for many different broadcasting companies for 12 years. In 2004 Margje de Koning became a part-time teacher in the Culture & Media studies (department Film& Television at the University of Amsterdam). In August 2004, Margje de Koning became Commissioning Editor for a documentary slot of 52’ docs. Since January 2005 Margje de Koning was responsible for the Television Department of IKON and in January 2012 she became Head of TV, Radio and New Media programming at IKON. From January 2016 IKON has been incorporated within EO with Margje de Koning as Commissioning Editor Documentaries for EO, JDocs and IKONdocs. Since June 2019, Margje has been the artistic director of Movies that Matter.
28th Sarajevo Film Festival will take place from 12th to the 19th of August, 2022.
