2020 Docu Rough Cut Boutique selection
STAYING TOGETHER, APART. Docu Rough Cut Boutique marks its 10th anniversary amid difficult times for humanity.
For Docu Rough Cut Boutique 2020 will be marked as one of the most memorable years, it is turning ten in times when nations and individuals are faced with many tragedies caused by the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus. The documentary filmmakers are known as sharp observers of the world around us, they have a gift to cope with the unpredictable, react in the moment, be flexible and tremendously inventive. We have great respect for their projects and it was unimaginable not to offer to the selected teams the chance to continue improving their projects and complete them with the help of the Docu Rough Cut Boutique’s mentors. In the eve of this crisis, Docu Rough Cut Boutique team had to find the most suitable method for participants and mentors to collaborate tightly and fruitfully from our homes, respecting the rules of safety that all of us have to apply.
A record number of submissions in 2020 had been received, and the decision-making process was long and tough. Rada Šešić and Martichka Bozhilova co-heads of Docu Rough Cut Boutique stressed that several very solid, compelling projects had to stay behind the selection line: “Our documentary boutique has space for only 5 projects, and we opted for those that we found the most cinematically exciting, author-driven with international potential. Three projects connect lucidly and inventively the past with the contemporary time, two are deep dives into topics that deal with the secrets of women and are made by female teams. Few directors are making their feature-length debuts, and all five of them are trying hard to find their own cinematic handwriting. We believe that these remarkable, out-of-the-box upcoming films will shine a bright light on important narratives from our region, stories that must be shared with the rest of the world. We remain faithful to our primary conviction to have creative, author-driven ambitious documentaries from the region and to support these fantastic endeavours.”
