LEENA PASANEN
Festival Director of DOK Leipzig (Germany)
Leena Pasanen started her career as a journalist in 1988 at the Finnish News Agency, first as a reporter and later on as a political commentator from the Parliament house. In 1993 she joined YLE, Finnish Broadcasting Company, where she worked as a reporter, political commentator, subeditor and TV presenter for the current affairs magazine programme on YLE TV1. After that she was the head of documentaries for YLE TV1 in 1999-2000. When YLE launched new digital channels, she was chosen as the Head of Programmes responsible for cultural, factual and fiction programmes in YLE Teema, a channel focusing on culture, science and education. She stayed with the channel until November 2005, when she started working as the Director of EDN, European Documentary Network in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 2008 she returned to YLE in Finland as Coordinator of Programmes and at YLE Fact and Culture and later as Coordinator and Senior Advisor at YLE Media and Customer Relations. In 2011 – 2014 she worked in Budapest, Hungary leading the Finnish Institute and also serving as cultural attaché at the Finnish Embassy in Budapest. She is currently based in Leipzig, Germany and working as Managing and Artistic Director of DOK Leipzig, the international film festival for documentary and animated film. She has been a regular expert, tutor and lecturer at several training programmes, for example EDN, Discovery Campus, EURODOC and Television Business School. She was a EURODOC 1999 graduate and a member of the international advisory committee at Hot Docs. She has also been a board member of IDFA Forum, INPUT and the Bonnier’s Journalistic Award in Finland and served as a jury member at several international festivals, among others Sundance and IDFA.
LUCIANO RIGOLINI
Artist-photographer and producer (Switzerland)
Born in Italian Switzerland in 1950, Luciano Rigolini graduated in film studies at the University of Paris 8. In the early 1990s he gained international recognition for his photography through work which he explored the specificity of the medium and the relation between photography and painting; this is still his field of research today. From 1995 until 2015 he has been based in Paris as a commissioning editor for the European cultural channel ARTE, where hi is in charge of auteur documentary, seeking out new narrative forms and keeping alive independent filmmaking driven by the spirit of innovation and discovery. He has produced work by directors such as Chris Marker, Alexander Sokurov, Naomi Kawase, Alain Cavalier, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Tsai Ming – liang, Laurie Anderson, and discovered numerous young talents.
MILA TURAJLIĆ
Director/Producer/Writer (Serbia)
Mila Turajlić is the Director/Producer/Writer of THE OTHER SIDE OF EVERYTHING that premiered at the Toronto IFF in 2017. It went on to win 14 awards including the prestigious IDFA Award for Best Documentary Film. The film was HBO Europe’s first co-production with Serbia, and had a record-breaking theatrical release in Serbia. Mila’s first feature doc, CINEMA KOMUNISTO played at over 80 festivals (Tribeca, IDFA, Hot Docs) and won 16 awards including the Gold Hugo and FOCAL International Award for Creative Use of Archival Footage. Mila studied politics at the London School of Economics, and film production at the national film school in Belgrade. She gained production experience working on feature films (Mel Gibson’s APOCALYPTO, Rian Johnson’s THE BROTHERS BLOOM). Since 2006 she is the director of Dribbling Pictures. She co-founded the Magnificent 7 Festival of European Feature Documentary Films in Belgrade, and in 2015 became the first president of DokSerbia - the Association of Serbian Documentary Filmmakers.
